Three hats in this portfolio—the Scribbler, Forager and Skyliner—are what might be referred to as “classic” fedoras. That means snap brim hats with fairly full, bashed crowns, a pinched front, and with a reasonable amount of brim, say no less than 21/4 inches for the sake of argument. Of these three, the Skyliner offers the grandest proportions. Here, the Hudson block is used to its full height. The crown is then given a deep diamond bash which nevertheless results in a hat with a good measure of vertical stature. A brim of some width, a 20 ligne ribbon and a galloon edge all fit the motif and help to create a look that, although substantial, is balanced and proportional and avoids conspicuous exaggeration. The Skyliner also sports a relatively unusual detail, a stubby back bow, allowing others to admire you from behind (if they’re into that sort of thing). A back bow, like a back patch, leaves the front of the hat looking clean and sleek, but a bow is a somewhat more dapper statement than the more neutral flat patch. Still, it’s a neat, fairly discreet style element that seems to say, “I care about stylish details, but I don’t flaunt them”— a creditable sartorial philosophy if ever there was one.
