the “Rambler”

It’s always useful to have a fine yet sporty hat in one’s repertoire, and the Rambler perfectly fits the bill. Like the Autobahner, its roots are decidedly alpine. Yet, today, the style effectively morphs into an easygoing hat for country or town (call it urban après ski ... if you dare). It looks particularly jaunty when made in overtly informal colours such as dark forest, camel, or the cheerful mustard colour shown top right. Still, even black or dark indigo can’t make this hat feel stern or sombre. A key feature of its design is the frieze-like effect of the braided band, providing contrast in relief but not in material or colour. The braid is fashioned from excess felt cut from the very same hat, ensuring perfect uniformity of tone and texture (see also the Keeper). The Rambler also combines a welterweight crown with a plush angora finish. This makes it very soft, supple and charmingly slouchy. All of this results in a very disarming hat which when given a fitting context—a contrasting woolen jacket perhaps—adopts a surreptitiously stylish demeanour.
