the “Luxemburger”

This arresting piece of headwear was originally created for Nicholas Atgemis of Le Noeud Papillon, an essential internet destination for stylish bow ties and other haberdashery. Nicholas not only wanted a hat, but also photos showing how it was made to post on his blog (the photo essay can be seen here). The Budapester was the starting motif, refashioned by the influence of a couple of photos of celebrated literary dandy, Tom Wolfe. However, given license to maintain Leon Drexler’s style sensibility, this hat was designed to be somewhat more restrained than Wolfe’s purposeful flamboyance. Still, the Luxemburger is built to be grander than the Budapester with a more imposing crown (sparingly pinched to retain its fullness), and a fairly wide, open curl (properly bound and invisibly stitched) with a notable fore-to-aft arc in the brim. A substantial 20 ligne ribbon on the crown provides ballast. All in all, the look is unrepentantly courtly, a hat that signals refinement and gentlemanliness, even a sense of wherewithal ... in other words, just about as mercifully off-trend as you can get, and that is perhaps the most important aspect of Mr. Wolfe’s guidance.
