the “Düsseldorfer”

The Düsseldorfer is one of Leon Drexler’s versions of what was once known as a Lord’s hat, a style that emerged as a more casual version of the somewhat dressier Homburg. Unlike the more classic and grandly proportioned Londoner, this rendition has a relatively low slung and tapered crown which gives the hat a more rakish attitude, anchored and constrained by the structural and dressy note of the curled brim. The slender 10 ligne ribbon and bow are neat and unobtrusive, nicely reflecting and emphasizing the line and volume of the curl. This is a discreetly cool-looking hat that exudes a certain stylistic tension between hipness and conservatism. It therefore merely awaits its owner’s individual interpretation.
