the “Budapester”

There are times when one desires a touch of old-world formality, but without resorting to the iconography of a bowler or top hat. The Budapester effectively fills that role. This is a rich looking hat, similar to but not quite a Homburg, with graceful lines and elegant finishes. Moreover, the well-appointed look of this hat is not mere appearance, but also one of substance. The finely ribbed grosgrain shown here is pure silk. The binding on the curled brim is invisibly sewn on the inside of the curl and discreetly hand-tacked on the outer edge—
a laborious task, but the reward is an elegantly tailored binding that hugs the curl with no visible line of stitching. For the most formal look, choose black felt with black ribbon or dark indigo with navy ribbon. Slightly less dressy versions would include charcoal grey with black ribbon, cocoa brown with black or chocolate ribbon and, pushing the classic envelope just a little, cocoa brown with oxblood. For those who prefer to push that envelope even further (or perhaps rip it asunder), two dozen colours of silk ribbon offer a host of variations. And of course, where ribbon sizes allow, French heirloom grosgrain in 15 or 17 ligne is also an option as shown in the winter grey, angora finish version to the right.
