the “Autobahner”

The traditional alpine hats of Bavaria, Switzerland and the Tyrol were the progenitors of the fedora. The Autobahner pays tribute to that ancestry but adopts a distinctly more voguish appearance. Still, the prototype shown here is particularly referential to its origins. The felt is natural, un-dyed beaver and, in this example, finished with a bit more nap for a more rustic feel. The ribbon is classic loden green. However, contrary to alpine tradition, there is minimal ornamentation, not even a bow. Instead, the ribbon sports an inconspicuous patch finish at the back of the hat. The streamlined effect complements the sleek, air-foil profile of the steeply upturned rear brim. Surely the perfect hat for a spin through the Alps in your cabriolet (or perhaps just a walk in the woods). Of course, the Autobahner can also be made with a standard finish and is an excellent candidate for a plush angora finish (see also the Rambler). Available in any colour combination of felt and 20 ligne ribbon.
